Several students in the June "Beginning Kayak Class" asked, "do we have to pay more for this"? They were referring to the extraordinary day we had together on the water in Gig Harbor.
As we took our short lunch break at the Lighthouse, a seaplane landed in front of us, the local fishing fleet departed, deer roamed near by, the harbor seals were abundant in front of us, while beautiful sail and power boats moved in and out of the harbor. It was as if an entire show had been planned just for us.
Experiencing the departure of the fishing fleet is extraordinary. It instantly reminded me of Gig Harbor's heritage. It was both exciting and sombering. Families of the fisherman gather along the shore, cheering them on with clapping, shouts and balloons. Heading out of the harbor, the vessels are in an impressive line up and they blast their horns along the way. Everyone seems to stop what they are doing to watch and pay respect to the fisherman of our harbor.
I told the class that this was all just part of Gig Harbor charm and no, there would be no extra charge. The next Beginner Adult Kayak Class is scheduled in August 2009. Registration is coordinated through the Tacoma Community College in Gig Harbor.
